At a certain point in their studies, the apprentices start to feel comfortable. Even the initiation rituals are becoming familiar, if not something they anticipate. At that point it is time for their Atonement ritual. It is a trial that is designed for failure. That is the point. No matter how well they think they are doing at their studies, how much pride they are beginning to feel, no one is perfect. Every man has limits, and reaches them at some point, but failure must be punished. Deeply and thoroughly.
